"Proposed B. S. [Battleships] Nos. 38 & 39" ... Scheme "J" ... February 28, 1912

Preliminary design plan for Fiscal Year 1913 battleships. This drawing was one of four sent to the Navy’s General Board on 2 March 1911 to illustrate options of interest. This plan was developed to illustrate a ship armed with twelve 14-inch guns but limited to the same protection and speed as the preceding Nevada (Battleship #36) class (see Photo # S-584-009). This plan shows a ship 15 feet shorter than Scheme "I" (see Photo # S-584-011) but with the same added draught. Reduced protection allowed a reduced displacement. The main side armor is 1.5 inches thinner than that provided in Scheme "I".
This plan provides twelve 14-inch guns, reciprocating steam machinery, and a speed of 20.5 knots in a ship 595 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 96 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 30,100 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
