Photo #: S-584-023 "Proposed B. S. [Battleship] 38" ... August 24, 1912 (Completed Sept.3, 1912) Preliminary design plan for Pennsylvania (Battleship # 38). This design continued the concept of "all-or-nothing" armor protection introduced in the previous Nevada (Battleship # 36) class (see Photo S-584-009), reducing the area protected by armor but increasing the thickness of armor significantly where it was provided. This drawing represents a nearly final version of the design. A notable change from earlier preliminary designs is shifting the underwater side armor from the shell to an internal bulkhead. The battleships Pennsylvania (Battleship # 38) and Arizona (Battleship # 39) were built to this design. This plan provides twelve 14-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 21 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 97 feet, 0 1/2 inches in beam, with a normal displacement of 31,400 tons. Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
