Photo #: S-584-048 "Battleship 1916" ... October 28, 1914 Design drawing illustrating a potential change to the features planned for Battleship # 43 of the Fiscal Year 1916 shipbuilding program. The Secretary of the Navy directed on 30 July 1914 that this design would be the same as the previous Battleship # 40 class (see Photo # S-584-044), except that speed would be reduced one-half knot to 20.5 knots. In comparison with the plan of October 4, 1914 (see Photo # S-584-047), this plan reverts to the same side protection system as Battleship # 40 while also reducing length by 20 feet, apparently an economy to reflect the reduced speed directed in this class. The design was changed significantly, and finally, a month later to a 600-foot long vessel with five vertical bulkheads inside the shell with flat protective decks above. This plan provides twelve 14-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 20.5 knots in a ship 580 feet long on the waterline, 97 feet 6 inches in beam, and with a normal displacement of 31,400 tons. Note: The original document was a blueprint (white on dark blue.) The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
