"200-Ft. Sub Chaser--Turbine Design" ... November 22, 1917
Preliminary design plan for a turbine-powered submarine chaser, prepared in
response to a proposal for such a medium-sized anti-submarine vessel made
in a letter of 28 October 1917 by the Special Board on Anti-Submarine Devices.
Navy Chief Constructor David W. Taylor provided some initial draft characteristics for
the preliminary design on 5 November 1917, and he reviewed this resulting plan
on 26 December. Industrialist Henry Ford met with Taylor on 28 December, and his
mass-production "Eagle Boat" design was developed from this steam-powered variant of the design.
This plan provides one 5-inch and one 3-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed
of 21 knots in a ship 200 feet long on the water line, 24 feet in beam, and with
a normal displacement of 475 tons.
Note: The original document was a blueprint (white on dark blue).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
