Photo #: S-584-125 Undated Draft Preliminary Design Plan for a 123-foot Submarine Chaser An undated rough draft for a preliminary design plan for a submarine chaser. This sketch appears to represent an initial layout for what became Preliminary Design No.188 (see Photo # S-584-124), a 118-foot design that was intended to be more seaworthy than the 105-foot (water line length) Submarine Chaser # 1 class design in production at the time. The key change was the addition of a depth charge projector and six 500-lb. depth charges, which added almost seven tons additional payload. (Some S. C. # 1 class ships later received a depth charge projector in place of their original 3-inch gun aft.) The design seen here retained the basic layout of the existing design, including placing some fuel tanks below officers living quarters amidships. Note: The original document was pencil on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval Historical Center Photograph.
