"U.S. Seagoing Mine Sweepers" ... March 28, 1918
Draft preliminary design plan for a seagoing minesweeper prepared by the
Bureau of Construction & Repair. While uncaptioned and lacking any descriptive
data, the plan appears identical with the Lapwing (Minesweeper # 1)
class ships built during 1917-1919. The preliminary design for the
Lapwing class was completed in spring 1917, and 1918 design work
supported the consideration of construction of a new class of minesweepers for
the 1920 program. Accordingly, this drawing may have aided General
Board preparation of the characteristics that were issued in September
1918 for the new design. No further new minesweepers were built until
the late 1930s, however.
This drawing provides no data on intended ship characteristics. The scale
shown on this drawing indicates a vessel of roughly 185 feet in length and
23 feet in beam.
Note: The original document was pencil on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
