Preliminary Design Plan for a "Proposed 1920 Scout Cruiser", Scheme C-1,
Arrangement I ... October 15, 1919
Preliminary design plan for a cruiser that might be built under the Fiscal Year
1920 program. This design was one of many considered in the process of settling
on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926.
The so-called "C" series investigated ships having one of three armament
arrangements (I, II, or III) on a hull of either 600 or 620 feet in length.
Arrangement I provided one triple 8-inch gun turret forward and two twin turrets
aft. The darkened area along the waterline amidships represents the 2-inch side armor.
This drawing is signed "F.M.H" for F.M. Hiatt, a civilian in the Preliminary
Design office.
This plan provided seven 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 36 knots in
a ship 620 feet long on the waterline, 57 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement
of 10,000 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
