Photo #: S-584-161 Preliminary Design Plan for "Cruiser Submarine 1919" ... April 9, 1920 Preliminary design plan for a "Cruiser Submarine" for the Fiscal Year 1919 shipbuilding program. This concept was developed in response to draft characteristics circulated by the General Board and provided longer radius of action in a design modified from that proposed early in 1920 for a "fleet submarine" (see Photo # S-584-160), having a heavier gun armament and changed propulsion plant. Design development, initially inspired in part by the German U-142 class submarine, ultimately resulted in three large submarines typified by V-4 of the Fiscal Year 1925 program (see Photos # S-584-191 and S-584-195). This plan provided two 6-inch guns, diesel-electric machinery, and a surface speed of 17 knots in a ship 325 feet long on the waterline, 27 feet 7.25 inches in beam, and with a normal surface displacement of 2,680 tons. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
