Photo #: S-584-174 Preliminary Design Sketch for a "12000 Ton Scout" Cruiser, Scheme # 1 ... February 28, 1921 Preliminary design drawing for a scout cruiser. This design was one of many considered in the process of settling on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This sketch was the baseline for a set of five alternative designs (see also Photos # S-584-175 to S-584-178) presented to the General Board in March 1921. This design provided four twin 8-inch gun turrets, two forward and two aft. The drawing illustrated two alternative possible arrangements of deck armor protection, one including an inclined segment having 4.5-inch plate. While providing desired capabilities, this design was considered too large to be affordable. This plan provided eight 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 34.5 knots in a ship 635 feet long on the waterline, 57 feet 6 inches in beam, and with a normal displacement of 12,000 tons. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
