"Aircraft Carrier 1922--Scheme 'B'" ... May 5, 1921

Preliminary design plan for an aircraft carrier for the Fiscal Year 1922 shipbuilding program (Scheme "B"). This drawing was sent on 12 May 1921 to the Navy Department in response to characteristics established by the General Board on 24 February 1921. The "Scheme A" design (plan not included in this collection) differed by having a flush flight deck without an island and having funnel exhaust vented laterally rather than up through a vertical funnel as employed in "Scheme B". No ship was built to this design concept, in part because shipbuilding plans were modified in response to the 1922 Washington Treaty.
This plan provided sixteen 6-inch guns, electric machinery, and a speed of 34 knots in a ship 850 feet long on the waterline, 94 feet in beam, and with a normal surface displacement of 39,000 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
