Photo #: S-584-186 "Shallow Draft Gunboat -- Tunnel Stern Type" ... July 1923 Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design was based on reciprocating steam machinery that was considered to be lighter in weight than other types. Adoption of tunnels around the propellers aft contributed to retention of the desired light draft of 4 feet 6 inches. This design also was passed over in favor of one incorporating more modern machinery (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, reciprocating steam machinery, and a speed of 16 knots in a ship 180 feet long on the waterline, 27 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 380 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
