Photo #: S-584-187 "River Gunboat -- Tunnel Stern Type" ... July 23, 1923 Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design was based on reciprocating steam machinery to save weight and a reduction in length to reduce overall ship size as recommended at the time by the operating forces. Use of tunnel screws also helped in reducing draft to only 4 feet. This design also was passed over in favor of a larger one incorporating more modern machinery (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, reciprocating steam machinery, and a speed of 15 knots in a ship 150 feet long on the waterline, 27 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 273 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
