Photo #: S-584-188 "River Gunboat -- Open Stern Type" ... August 4, 1923 Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design was based on reciprocating steam machinery. An increase in length and beam kept draft at 4 feet while displacement was increased. This plan provided for propellers aft either inside tunnels under the deck or in open, surface installations. This design was passed over in favor of one incorporating more modern machinery (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, reciprocating steam machinery, and a speed of 15 knots in a ship 180 feet long on the waterline, 30 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 375 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
