Photo #: S-584-189 "River Gunboat--Tunnel Sterns" ... September 28, 1923 Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design was based on an electric drive machinery plant intended to have high reliability as prescribed by the Bureau of Engineering. This plan provided for propellers aft inside tunnels and increased beam to keep draft to 4 feet 6 inches. This design was passed over in favor of one incorporating lighter modern machinery (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 14.75 knots in a ship 200 feet long on the waterline, 35 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 600 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
