Light Cruiser ... "Sketch A" ... November 16, 1923
Preliminary design plan for a cruiser to be built under treaty limitations
covering ships of up to 10,000 tons treaty displacement. This drawing
represents a design that met General Board characteristics for a ship that
might be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design
provided a heavy main gun armament and comparatively high speed at the
expense of having no armor protection except for light conning tower
plating but proved too heavy and too costly. This design was one of
many considered in the process of settling on the plans adopted for the
Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926.
This plan provided twelve 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of
34 knots in a ship 620 feet long on the waterline, 64 feet 10 inches in
beam, and with a normal displacement of 11,500 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
