Photo #: S-584-192 "River Gun Boat" ... March 22, 1924 Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built at this time. This drawing was based on modifying a previous 180-foot long design to incorporate diesel machinery plus a few other improvements, such as thicker bottom plating. This plan provided for propellers aft in open surface installations. This design was modified to incorporate propellers in tunnel installation in the design ultimately approved for construction (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, diesel machinery, and a speed of 15 knots in a ship 178 feet 7 inches long on the waterline, 27 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 385 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
