Photo #: S-584-194 "River Gun Boat" ... April 26 (1924) Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This drawing represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken to provide a design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design was based on a new set of characteristics provided by Admiral Phelps of the U.S. Navy Yangtse River Patrol Force that sought a shorter vessel having high maneuverability and shallower draft. This design provided for open surface propellers, three rudders (not shown in this drawing), and a draft close to the 4 feet prescribed. This design was passed over in favor of a larger design (see Photo # S-584-193). This plan provided two 3-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 15 knots in a ship 150 feet long on the waterline, 27 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 380 tons in fresh water. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
