"10,000 Ton Treaty Displacement Airplane Carrier" ...
January 15, 1925
Preliminary design plan for an aircraft carrier. This drawing
represents one of a series of alternative designs undertaken
during 1925-1926 to explore the capabilities possible in aircraft
carriers ranging from 10,000 to 23,000 tons in an attempt to
select the best balance between ship size and the number that
could be built under the Washington Treaty's aggregate displacement
limit. The calculations supporting this 10,000 ton design were
recorded in Preliminary Design Book V-9, which document probably
was discarded in the 1970s. No ship was built to this design.
This plan provides four 6-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a
speed of 30 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the waterline, 72
feet in beam on the waterline, and with a displacement as defined
by Washington Treaty provisions of 10,000 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on
white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
