"10000 Ton Light Cruiser with Forecastle" ... September 16, 1925
Preliminary design plan for a cruiser to be built under treaty limitations covering
ships of up to 10,000 tons treaty displacement. This plan adopted a forecastle deck
forward for improved seakeeping, a feature that was not employed in the U.S. Navy’s
first cruisers built under treaty limits, the Pensacola (CL-24) class of
Fiscal Year 1926. The drawing includes a data table that includes the comparative
freeboard between a flush deck design (like Pensacola) and this design. This
drawing anticipates the design of the Northampton (CL-26) class of Fiscal Year 1927.
It is initialed “J.L.B.", for James L. Bates, the lead civilian in the Preliminary
Design office between the two world wars.
This plan provided four 8-inch gun turrets in a ship with a treaty displacement of
10,000 tons. No other data are shown on this drawing.
Note: The original document was pencil on paper (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
