Chief Quartermaster John Brazell, USN, (1837-1866)

John Brazell was born in 1837 in Philadephia, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from that state and served in the steam sloops of war Brooklyn and Richmond during the Civil War. In 1862 and 1863 he took part in several combat actions on the lower Mississippi River. On 5 August 1864, while serving as a gun captain on USS Richmond in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama, Quartermaster Brazell performed his duties with "coolness and good conduct", and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He later attained the rank of Chief Quartermaster. John Brazell died at Philadelphia on 12 August 1866.

U.S. Navy Medal of Honor citation of Quartermaster John Brazell, USN (as printed in the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 16):

"Served on board the U.S.S. Richmond in the action at Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864, where he was recommended for coolness and good conduct as a gun captain during that engagement which resulted in the capture of the rebel ram Tennessee and in the destruction of Fort Morgan. BRAZELL served gallantly throughout the actions with Forts Jackson and St. Philip, the Chalmettes, batteries below Vicksburg, and was present at the surrender of New Orleans while on board the U.S.S. Brooklyn."
