Chief Boatswain's Mate Philip A. Carey, USN, (1881-1928)
Philip Andrew Carey, born on 14 July 1881 in New York City,
enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 17 May 1900. Following training in
USS Hartford and USS Buffalo he was sent to the
Far East, where during 1902-1904 he served in the auxiliary ships
Rainbow and Iris
and in several of the gunboats employed in the suppression of
the Philippine Insurrection. Seaman Carey reenlisted in July 1904.
For most of the next four years he served in the eastern Pacific
as crew member of the cruiser Chicago,
receiving promotion to Coxswain in April 1907 and Boatswain's
Mate Second Class in March 1908. During the bulk of his third
enlistment, in 1908-1911, Carey was assigned to the armored cruiser
Pennsylvania,
also in the eastern Pacific. Though his evaluations during his
career were generally "good" to "excellent",
while in that ship he appears to have had considerable difficulty
with his officers. In March 1909 he was disrated to Seaman following
a General Court Martial. Given an acting appointment as Coxwain
early in 1910, shortly afterwards he was again disrated to Seaman
and, in January 1911, a Summary Court Martial at the Puget Sound
Navy Yard sentenced him to a Bad Conduct Discharge.
Carey's time outside the Navy was clearly well-spent. In May
1917 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve Force as a Chief Boatswain's
Mate, two grades above his highest previous rank. Assigned to
the Puget Sound Navy Yard, at Bremerton, Washington, Chief Carey
was employed on World War I era training duties and as an athletic
coach. The latter assignment included supervision of a boating
crew team made up of Yeomen
(F). He subsequently married Omah
Munier, who had been one of the Navy Yard's Chief Yeomen during
this time.
In June 1919, Chief Boatswain's Mate Carey transferred from
the Reserves to the regular Navy, continuing his service at the
Puget Sound Navy Yard until his health failed. In June 1921 he
was sent to the Naval Hospital at Fort Lyons, Colorado, for sanatorium
treatment. Moved at the end of 1921 to the Army's Fitzsimons General
Hospital in Denver, he was a patient there until transferred to
the Fleet Reserve in June 1923. About two years later, he was
examined, found fit for shore duty and, in February 1926, recalled
to active duty. Following training at San Diego, California, Chief
Carey spent the rest of 1926 and most of 1927 on recruiting service
at Denver, Colorado. In November of the latter year he was again
admitted to Fitzsimons General Hospital, where he died on 14 March
1928.
