Seaman Joachim Pease, USN, (1842-????)

Joachim Pease was born in 1842 in Long Island, New York. He enlisted in the US Navy from New York City and served onboard USS Kearsarge during the Civil War. Pease was a loader of the No.2 Gun while Kearsarge battled CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France on 19 June 1864 . For his conduct during this engagement, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

U.S. Navy poster photographed in 1970. Joachim Pease received the Medal of Honor for his conduct while loader of the No.2 Gun on USS Kearsarge as she battled CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France on 19 June 1864.

Medal of Honor citation of Seaman Joachim Pease (as printed in the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 43):

"Served as seaman on board the U.S.S.Kearsarge when she destroyed the Alabama off Cherbourg, France, 19 June 1864. Acting as loader on the No. 2 gun during this bitter engagement, PEASE exhibited marked coolness and good conduct and was highly recommended by his divisional officer for gallantry under fire."
