Augusta, a 1310-ton side-wheel steamship, was built in 1852 at New York City for employment in shipping routes from there to Savannah, Georgia, and to the Gulf of Mexico. She was purchased by the U.S. Navy in August 1861 and served as USS Augusta from then until December 1868, when she was sold to commercial interests. Renamed Magnolia, she operated between New York and the South until 30 September 1877, when she foundered in a storm while en route from Savannah, Georgia, to New York.
