Bessie J. (American Barge).
Had U.S. Navy service in 1918-1920 as Bessie J. (SP-1919), SP-1919 and Coal Barge # 512

Bessie J., a 390 gross ton barge, was built at Camden, Maine. At the end of September 1917, while owned by the Boston Tow Boat Company, she was inspected by the First Naval District for possible acquisition, and assigned the registry number SP-1919. Bessie J. was taken over in March 1918 and in April was renamed SP-1919. She later became Coal Barge # 512. The barge was sold at the beginning of September 1920.

This page features the only view we have concerning the barge Bessie J., which had U.S. Navy service as Bessie J. (SP-1919), SP-1919 and Coal Barge # 512 in 1918-1920.

In port, possibly when she was inspected by the First Naval District on 30 September 1917. She was owned by the Boston Tow Boat Company, of Boston, Massachusetts.
Assigned the registry ID # SP-1919, this barge was acquired by the Navy on 9 March 1918. Renamed SP-1919 on 11 April 1918, she later became Coal Barge # 512 and was sold on 1 September 1920.
