Bessie J., a 390 gross ton barge, was built at Camden, Maine. At the end of September 1917, while owned by the Boston Tow Boat Company, she was inspected by the First Naval District for possible acquisition, and assigned the registry number SP-1919. Bessie J. was taken over in March 1918 and in April was renamed SP-1919. She later became Coal Barge # 512. The barge was sold at the beginning of September 1920.
This page features the only view we have concerning the barge Bessie J., which had U.S. Navy service as Bessie J. (SP-1919), SP-1919 and Coal Barge # 512 in 1918-1920.
