Buitenzorg, a 7098 gross ton freighter, was built in 1916 at Flushing, The Netherlands, for commercial employment under the Dutch flag. She was seized at New York by the U.S. Government in March 1918, transferred to the Navy and placed in commission later in that month as Buitenzorg (ID # 2541). As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, she made six trips to France with general cargo and animals, three completed prior to the 11 November 1918 Armistice and the rest after the fighting had stopped. In mid-July 1919, after going to Rotterdam at the conclusion of her last Navy voyage, USS Buitenzorg was returned to her owners.
This page features the only view we have concerning the Dutch freighter Buitenzorg, which was USS Buitenzorg (ID # 2541) in 1918-1919.
