S.S. Carib (American Freighter, 1916).
Served as USS Carib (ID # 1765) in 1917-1919

Carib, a 2118 gross ton freighter, was built in 1916 at Detroit, Michigan, for commercial employment. She was taken over by the Navy in late December 1917 and placed in commission at that time as USS Carib (ID # 1765). After carrying coal between East Coast and Canadian ports during the first four months of 1918, she made a voyage from the U.S. to the Mediterranean and back between May and August, then took mines and other cargo to Scotland in support of the North Sea Mine Barrage project. On Carib's final Navy trip, she transported Army materiel to France, beginning in November 1918. At the conclusion of this mission, the ship was decommissioned and returned to her owner in late January 1919. Following nearly another decade in civilian hands, Carib was abandoned in 1928.

This page features the only view we have concerning the steamship Carib, which served as USS Carib (ID # 1765) in 1917-1919.
