Carolinian, a 4170 gross ton freighter, was built in 1906 at West Hartlepool, England. During the first decade or so of her commercial career, she was also named Harley and Southerner. Following World War I duty under charter to the U.S. Army, the ship was acquired by the Navy in early October 1918 and placed in commission as USS Carolinian (ID # 1445). During the last part of 1918 and the first month of 1919 she carried coal between the United Kingdom and France. In February, the ship began a westward trans-Atlantic voyage with Army cargo. She arrived at Baltimore, Maryland, in March and later in that month was decommissioned and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owners, the Garland Steamship Company of New York City.
This page features the only view we have concerning the steamship Carolinian, which served as USS Carolinian (ID # 1445) in 1918-1919.
