S.S. Cauto (American Freighter, 1916).
Served as USS Cauto (ID # 1538) in 1918-1919

Cauto, a 3820 gross ton (8060 tons displacement) freighter, was built in 1916 at Seattle, Washington. After operating under U.S. Army charter, in July 1918 she was transferred to the Navy and placed in commission as USS Cauto (ID # 1538). The ship served with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service carrying cargo to France, making three round-trip voyages for this purpose. She was decommissioned in late February 1919 and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owner, the New York & Cuba Mail Steamship Company.

This page features all the views we have concerning the steamship Cauto, which served as USS Cauto (ID # 1538) in 1918-1919.
