Chilhowee, a 125-foot (95 gross ton) steam yacht, was built in 1898 at Baltimore, Maryland. In June 1917, a few months after the United States entered World War I, she was placed in commission as USS Chilhowee (SP-525), though she was not formally acquired by the Navy until July. After two years' employment as a patrol and inspection vessel in the vicinity of Norfolk and Hampton Roads, Virginia, Chilhowee was decommissioned in September 1919. Immediately transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard, she was renamed York (CG-10) and continued to serve in the Norfolk area until disposed of in 1922.
This page features the only views we have concerning the steam yacht Chilhowee, which served as USS Chilhowee (SP-525) in 1917-1919 and later as USCGC York (CG-10).
