Dolphin (American Barge, 1903).
Served as U.S. Navy Coal Barge # 518 in 1917-1919
Dolphin, a 480 ton (estimated displacement) wooden-hull
open barge, was built in 1903. In 1917, when she was owned by
the C.F. Harms Company of New York City, she was inspected by
the Third Naval District and assigned the registry ID # 1314.
Chartered by the Navy in early November 1917, she was employed
for the rest of World War I, and for several months afterwards,
as Coal Barge # 518. The barge was returned to her owners
in August 1919.
This page features the only views we have concerning the
open barge Dolphin of 1903, which was U.S. Navy Coal
Barge # 518 in 1917-1919.

Dolphin (American Open Barge, 1903)
In port, possibly when she was inspected by the Third Naval District,
circa 1917.
Assigned the Navy registry ID # 1314, Dolphin was chartered
by the Navy on 3 November 1917. Following service as Coal
Barge # 518 she was returned to her owners, the C.F. Harms
Company of New York City, on 20 August 1919.

USS Bagley (Torpedo Boat # 24)
Alongside the barge Dolphin (ID # 1314, also known as
Coal Barge # 518) in a New York City area yacht basin,
circa 1917-1918.
Partially visible at right is USS Freelance (SP-830).
Another patrol vessel (converted yacht) and a tug are in the
right background.
