S.S. Drechterland, a 3935 gross ton freighter, was built at Sunderland, England, in 1903 for commercial operation under the Dutch flag. She was interned by the U.S. Government during the First World War and, in March 1918, transferred to the Navy and placed in commission as USS Drechterland (ID # 2793). As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, the ship carried Army supplies between the U.S. East Coast and European ports. After five voyages for this purpose, she was decommissioned at Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in July 1919 and returned to her owners.
This page features the only view we have concerning the Dutch freighter Drechterland of 1903, which was USS Drechterland (ID # 2793) in 1918-1919.
