East Hampton, a 407 gross ton steam trawler, was built in 1913 by Cobb & Butler of Rockland, Maine. She was acquired by the Navy in April 1917 from the Trident Fisheries Company of Portland, Maine, and placed in commission in May as USS East Hampton (SP-573). She was mainly employed in northern New England waters for minesweeping, icebreaking, patrol and towing over the next year and a half. However, in the summer of 1918 she had longer-range duty while escorting submarine chasers from the U.S. to Bermuda and the Azores. Outfitted as a lightship after the First World War's fighting had ended, East Hampton performed that function during the first several months of 1919 and was not decommissioned until early December of that year. She was sold in mid-June 1920.
This page features the only view we have concerning the trawler East Hampton, which was USS East Hampton (SP-573) in 1917-1920.
