Frank H. Buck, a 6076 gross ton tanker, was built at San Francisco, California, in 1914. In April 1917 and January 1918 she was inspected for possible U.S. Navy service, and was placed in commission late in the latter month as USS Frank H. Buck (ID # 1613). Between February and December 1918 the ship made six round-trip voyages to the British Isles to deliver oil fuel for use in World War I operations. On 1 September 1918, while westbound in the Atlantic, she engaged the German submarine U-155 with gunfire, inflicting damage on her opponent. USS Frank H. Buck was decommissioned in late January 1919 and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owner, the Associated Oil Company of San Francisco.
