Gorontalo, a 5884 gross ton freighter, was built at Rotterdam in 1908. Interned at Newport News, Virginia, she was seized by U. S. customs officials in March 1918, turned over to the Navy and commissioned in April 1918 as USS Gorontalo (ID # 2682). Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, between May and October 1918 the ship made two voyages in convoys to France with Army cargo, returning to the United States in ballast. She was then fitted for service as an animal transport and at the end of November sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, to France with 4,197 tons of general cargo and 557 horses. Returning to Norfolk in February 1919 with aviation material and Army supplies, Gorontalo moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and loaded a cargo of flour. She delivered this to Hamburg, Germany, in March and was then ordered to proceed to Rotterdam, The Netherlands. USS Gorontalo was decommissioned there in May 1919 and returned to her Dutch owners.
This page features the only view we have concerning the Dutch freighter Gorontalo, which was USS Gorontalo (ID # 2682) in 1918-1919.
