Guantanamo, a 3292 gross ton (7930 tons displacement) cargo ship, was built at West Hartlepool, England, in 1910 as Registan. She was operated by the New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Co. as Guantanamo when the Navy took her over at Philadelphia on 20 May 1918 and commissioned her a day later as USS Guantanamo (ID # 1637). Between May and December 1918 the ship made three voyages from the United States to France with Army cargo, including ammunition, returning each time in ballast. USS Guantanamo was decommissioned and returned to the New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Co. on 25 January 1919.
This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Guantanamo, which was USS Guantanamo (ID # 1637) in 1918-1919.
