Hippocampus (American Motor Boat, 1913).
Served as USS Hippocampus (SP-654) in 1917-1919

Hippocampus, a 56-foot motor pleasure boat, was built at New York in 1912-13. She was leased by the Navy in June 1917 and commissioned as USS Hippocampus (SP-654). Through the rest of World War I, she was used as a harbor patrol craft at Rockland, Maine, and in Penobscot Bay. Hippocampus was decommissioned in November 1918 and returned to her owner in April 1919.

This page features the only views we have related to the motor boat Hippocampus, which served as USS Hippocampus (SP-654) in 1917-1919.

Hippocampus
(American Motor Boat, 1913)

Halftone reproduction of a photograph published in a contemporary publication. Hand written notes are on the original print, which is mounted on Hippocampus' "SP" data card, and reflect the compensation paid to the boat's owner for her use by the Navy during World War I.
This pleasure craft was acquired by the the Navy under lease on 21 June 1917 and placed in commission as USS Hippocampus (SP-654) on 25 June 1917. She was returned to her owner on 5 April 1919.
