S.S. Lake Helen (American Freighter, 1918)
Served as USS Lake Helen (ID # 4215-E) in 1918-1919.
Later S.S. York, Skogvik, and Kama

Lake Helen, a 1998 gross ton freighter, was completed at Duluth, Minnesota, in September 1918. The ship was commissioned at Montreal, Canada, in October 1918 as USS Lake Helen (ID # 4215-E). Immediately sailing for European waters, she was assigned to the Army coal trade, carrying coal from Cardiff, Wales, and Belfast, Northern Ireland to French ports. Lake Helen remained in this trade until departing St. Nazaire, France for New York in July 1919 with a full cargo of Army ordnance material. The freighter was decommissioned in August 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. S.S. Lake Helen was renamed York in 1926, Skogvik in 1929 and Kama (under the Soviet flag) in 1933. She was deleted from merchant ship registers in around 1970.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Lake Helen, USS Lake Helen (ID # 4215-E), and S.S. York, Skogvik, and Kama.
