Lake Yahara, a 2338 gross ton (4615 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Chicago, Illinois, in 1918 as part of the World War I emergency ship construction effort. Completed at the end of July 1918, Lake Yahara was initially manned by the U. S. Shipping Board and sailed to Europe in convoy, carrying around 500 tons of Army general cargo. After arriving in European waters she was assigned to the Army coal trade, carrying coal from Wales to French ports. Initially operating under time charter, she was taken over by the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (N.O.T.S.) and was commissioned as USS Lake Yahara (ID # 3974) on 28 December 1918 at Brest, France. She departed Wales for the United States on 3 March 1919 and arrived at New York on 20 March. The ship was decommissioned and returned to the Shipping Board on 26 March 1919. Lake Yahara was scrapped by the Ford Motor Company in 1928.
This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Lake Yahara, which was USS Lake Yahara (ID # 3974) in 1918-1919.
