Long Island, a 167-ton steam trawler, was built in 1912 at Rockland, Maine. She was purchased by the Navy in April 1917 and commissioned the next month as USS Long Island (SP-572). Through World War I she served as a harbor patrol vessel, minesweeper and icebreaker, mainly in the Boston area. In March-April 1918, she made an ocean voyage, escorting a submarine chaser to Bermuda. A few months after the end of hostilities, Long Island was assigned duty as a temporary lightship off Charleston, South Carolina. In June 1919 she began two months' of operations along the Atlantic coast between Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Boston. USS Long Island was decommissioned in September 1919 and sold the following December.
