Mauna Loa (Motor Boat, 1916).
Served as USS Mauna Loa (SP-28) in 1917-1918
Mauna Loa, a 55-foot motor boat, was built in 1916 as
a pleasure craft at Neponset, Massachusetts, by the George Lawley
company. In May 1917, soon after the United States entered World
War I, she was leased by the Navy and placed in commission as
USS Mauna Loa (SP-28). Operated in Northern New England
(First Naval District) waters through the rest of the conflict,
she was decommissioned and returned to her owner in early December
1918.
This page features our only views of the motor boat Mauna
Loa, which was USS Mauna Loa (SP-28) during 1917-18.
