Neponset (Freighter, 1918).
Originally named Shawmut.
Served as USS Neponset (ID # 3581) in 1918-1919
The steamship Neponset, a 7699 gross ton freighter,
was built at Chester, Pennsylvania. Launched in July 1918 under
the name Shawmut, she was renamed before completion. The
Navy took her over in late October 1918 and simultaneously placed
her in commission as USS Neponset (ID # 3581). She made
one voyage across the Atlantic to France in November, carrying
general cargo and a shipment of horses. She was decommissioned
in early February 1919, after returning to the U.S., and was returned
to the United States Shipping Board.
This page features the only views we have concerning the
freighter Neponset, which was USS Neponset (ID #
3581) in 1918-19.

by the Third Naval District.

this freighter was acquired by the Navy on 28 October 1918 and
placed in commission at that time as USS Neponset (ID
