Owaissa (American Motor Boat, 1912).
Served as USS Owaissa (SP-659) in 1917-1919

Owaissa, a 77' 9" motor boat, was built in 1912 by the New York Yacht, Launch and Engine Company of Morris Heights, New York, for use as a pleasure craft. Leased by the Navy in July 1917, she was placed in commission as USS Owaissa (SP-659) in November of that year. For the rest of World War I she served on patrol service in the vicinity of Wood's Hole, Massachusetts. USS Owaissa was decommissioned and returned to her owner in January 1919.

This page features the only view we have concerning the motor boat Owaissa, which served as USS Owaissa (SP-659) in 1917-1919.

Note:
The original print for this photograph was mounted on the "SP" data card for Katie (SP-660), probably as a result of a clerical error when the card was originally prepared in 1917. Despite the name "Katie" written in pencil on the original print, the name "Owaissa" is visible on the name board above the boat's forward superstructure.
