Pawnee (American Steam Yacht, 1904).
Served as USS Pawnee (SP-699) and USS SP-699 in 1917-1921

Pawnee, a 114-foot steam yacht, was built at Neponset, Massachusetts, in 1904. She was purchased by the Navy in late June 1917 and commissioned as USS Pawnee (SP-699) at the beginning of July. To avoid confusion with a pre-existing Navy tug of the same name, her name was changed to SP-699 in April 1918. Her First World War service, probably in the New England area, included minesweeping work. Decommissioned after the end of the conflict, SP-699 was sold in July 1920, but this transaction was not completed and she was resold in July 1921.

This page features our only views of the steam yacht Pawnee, which served as USS Pawnee (SP-699) and USS SP-699 during the World War I era.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds another view of the yacht Pawnee, taken before she entered Navy service. This photograph shows her from off the port bow, moored in a harbor and housed over for storage. A smaller two-masted sailboat is moored nearby, partially obscuring Pawnee's stern.
This print is mounted on the "SP" data card for Pawnee (SP-699).
