S.S. Stephen R. Jones (American Collier, 1915)
Served as USS Stephen R. Jones (ID # 4526) in 1918-1919.

Stephen R. Jones, a 4387 gross ton (10,200 tons displacement) collier, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1915. She was commissioned in the Navy on 3 May 1918 as USS Stephen R. Jones (with the ID # 4526 probably being assigned some years later) and employed as a general cargo ship. After loading a full shipment of Army supplies at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she sailed from Norfolk, Virginia in May in a convoy to Brest, France. Because of port congestion at Brest she was sent to Bordeaux to offload her cargo. Returning to Philadelphia in July, Stephen R. Jones loaded another Army cargo and delivered it at St. Nazaire in August. Between September 1918 and February 1919 she made two similar voyages except that the final destination was La Pallice, France. USS Stephen R. Jones was decommissioned at Norfolk, Virginia, on 8 March 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous delivery to her owners, the Crowell & Thurlow Steamship Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Following more than two decades of subsequent commercial service, S.S. Stephen R. Jones was wrecked in the Cape Cod Canal in June 1942.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American collier Stephen R. Jones, which was USS Stephen R. Jones (ID # 4526) in 1918-1919.
