Violet (American Barge, 1897).
May have seen U.S. Navy service in 1918-1919 with ID # 2395, perhaps
as Coal Barge # 420
Violet, a 334 gross ton wooden-hulled barge, was built
at Elkton, Maryland, in 1897 and employed carrying coal out of
Norfolk, Virginia. She was inspected for possible U.S. Navy acquisition
in March 1918, assigned the registry ID # 2395, and ordered to
be taken over in May. Reportedly she became the Navy's Coal
Barge # 420. If this is the case, she was taken out of service
sometime before the fall of 1919.
This page features all the views we have concerning the
barge Violet, which may have seen U.S. Navy service in
1918-1919.
