S.S. West Avenal (American Freighter, 1919).
Served as USS West Avenal (ID # 3871) in 1919

S.S. West Avenal, a 5808 gross ton (12,200-tons displacement) freighter was built at South San Francisco, California, as part of the World War I ship constrution program. Completed in early 1919, a few months after the conflict's end, she was turned over to the Navy at the beginning of February and placed in commission at that time as USS West Avenal (ID # 3871). After taking a cargo of flour from the West Coast to Norfolk, Virginia, she was decommissioned in early April 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. West Avenal was abandoned in 1928.

Probably photographed circa January 1919, when she was first completed by the Western Pipe & Steel Company, South San Francisco, California.
This freighter was taken over by the Navy on 1 February 1919 and placed in commission as USS West Avenal (ID # 3871). She was returned to the U.S. Shipping Board on 5 April 1919.
