Whirlwind, a 111-foot (59 gross ton) motor yacht, was built at Morris Heights, New York, in 1909. She was acquired by the Navy in May 1917 and placed in commission late in June as USS Whirlwind (SP-221). She was sent to New Haven, Connecticut, in August and used during that month and the next on patrol service in Long Island Sound. Overhauled during the fall of 1917, the craft was placed out of commission in December 1917. Later sent to Lake Michigan, where her poor seaworthiness would be less critical, Whirlwind was recommissioned in late September 1918 for use at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. She was decommissioned at Detroit, Michigan, in December 1918 and sold at the end of June 1919.
