S.S. Winnebago (American Freighter, 1900)
Formerly named Heathcraig, Hampton and Haugarland. Served as USS Winnebago (ID # 2353) in 1918. Later renamed Fie Jensen and Ontario.

Winnebago, a 4362 gross ton (9625 tons displacement) freighter, was built as Heathcraig for a British firm at Stockton on Tees, England, in 1900. She became the British Hampton in 1907, the Norwegian Haugarland in 1913 and the American Winnebago in 1915. The U.S. Navy took the ship over at Hoboken, New Jersey, on 9 February 1918 and put her in commission on 6 March 1918 as USS Winnebago (ID # 2353). Steaming to Norfolk in late March, she loaded a cargo of explosives for the Army and sailed on 31 March for Pauillac, France. After discharging her cargo the ship sailed for New York on 13 May, arriving on 30 May. Winnebago was decommissioned and returned to her owners on 11 June 1918. Renamed Fie Jensen in 1923 and Ontario in 1925, she was scrapped at Rotterdam in 1927.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Winnebago (formerly named Heathcraig, Hampton and Haugarland), which was USS Winnebago (ID # 2353) in 1918.
