S.S. Yellowstone (American Freighter, 1918)
Served as USS Yellowstone (ID # 2657) in 1918-1919.

Yellowstone, a 6171 gross ton (12,570 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Oakland, California, in April 1918. Earlier names reported for this ship were Passatt and War Boy or, more likely, War Buoy. She was commissioned in the Navy on 21 September 1918 as USS Yellowstone (ID # 2657). In October 1918 the freighter carried general Army cargo in a convoy from New York to Quiberon, France. Following her return to New York in December, Yellowstone recrossed the Atlantic, eastbound, arriving at Brest, France, in February 1919 with another Army shipment. After repairs necessitated by a minor collision she arrived back at New York in May with Army return cargo. USS Yellowstone was decommissioned on 24 May 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. Her subsequent commercial career was brief, as in December 1920 S.S. Yellowstone dragged anchor and was blown ashore in the Azores.

This page features the only views we have concerning the American freighter Yellowstone, which was USS Yellowstone (ID # 2657) in 1918-1919.
