Pak Tu San (Submarine Chaser # PC-701, 1950-1960)
Pak Tu San, a 173-foot submarine chaser originally built
in 1944 as the USS PC-823, was purchased on the civil market in
1949 with funds raised among the personnel of the Republic of
Korea Navy. She had previously carried the name Ensign Whitehead
and was the first significant warship of the newly independent
nation. Following outfitting, Pak Tu San arrived in South
Korea shortly before the Korean
War broke out in June 1950. During that conflict she was employed
in operations along the Korean coasts. Pak Tu San remained
in Republic of Korea Naval service until 1960.
This page features views of the Republic of Korea submarine
chaser Pak Tu San (PC-701, 1950-1960).
